A different kind of security
What we can and can’t see
One of our principles: never overstate. Different conversations are encrypted differently, so we explain each one.
1:1 chats & voice callsEnd-to-end encrypted
The server can’t read or hear them.
1:1 chats are end-to-end encrypted with the Signal Protocol (including Kyber post-quantum key agreement); call keys are negotiated directly between the two phones. Messages are deleted from the server once delivered — no history is kept.
Groups / Channels / BotsTLS in transit
Not end-to-end: the server can read them while relaying.
These messages are encrypted in transit with TLS. The server can read their content while relaying them, but likewise keeps no history (deleted once relayed). They are less confidential than 1:1 chats — please use them accordingly.
Media files, offline messages awaiting delivery, and the metadata our servers must keep for routing (accounts, contacts, group member lists, device records and so on) are itemized in our Privacy Policy (Simplified Chinese) — including what we can’t do.
Familiar to use, serious underneath
Chats, contacts, QR scanning — it all works the way you’re used to, with nothing new to learn. Where you can’t see it, we didn’t cut corners.
Instantly familiar
Chats, contacts, QR scanning, message recall and quoted replies work the way you’re used to. Voice-to-text runs on your phone, so your voice never leaves the device.
Groups & channels
Public groups, private groups you join by QR code or invite link, and read-only broadcast channels — with announcements, admin and mute tools built in.
Private accounts: no phone number
Sign up with a recovery phrase generated only on your phone — no phone number, no email needed. ChuanYin doesn’t read your contacts or access your location.
Multiple devices & new phones
Scan once to link a new device, then compare a short safety code to confirm it’s you. Moving to a new phone? Your chat history transfers directly between the two phones on the same network — never through our servers.
Safety numbers & screenshot protection
Compare safety numbers in person to confirm who you’re talking to; if their identity changes, sending pauses until you confirm. Chats can also turn on screenshot protection — though, honestly, it can’t stop another phone from photographing the screen.
Bots & mini programs
Use mini programs and bots right inside your chats. They are not end-to-end encrypted, and mini programs can’t see your ChuanYin ID or real identity.
